Chapter 13

A few more questions about my whereabouts followed and then Gladstone seemed to run out of steam. It was a good thing because my father was obviously in pain, having been seated for so long, and his patience was wearing thin.

A sigh of relief swept over us all after Gladstone left, and I peeked between the curtains in the dining room to see if he was going back to Glenda’s to grill them. But he got in his car and left, whether to chat with Officer Reed or back to Pittsfield, I couldn’t be certain. I went back to Glenda’s and invited her over to our place—with the dessert, of course—so we’d have coffee and cake before my parents left for home.

“What was it like?” she asked me as we crossed the back gardens to our kitchen door. Stuart hurried to catch up and overhear the conversation.

“The usual. He thinks he will impress everyone by giving them a third degree. By the way, Stuart. What are the first and second degree?”

“What an intriguing question! I don’t know, never having been ‘grilled,’ as you put it, by the police, or even arrested, for that matter. But it would make for an excellent book title: The First, the Second and the Third Degree.”

“Maybe that’s three books, each with its own title,” I suggested.

“That’s even better. A suspenseful build-up to the third in the series. Aggie, you should give up the blood and gore and work for me creating fictional blood and gore.”

“Thank you for the offer, Stuart, but seeing the pace at which the Crompton sisters work, I prefer what I am doing. Yours might be the more entertaining profession—there’s nothing wrong with that, but mine has a definite impact on peoples’ lives.” I realized that sounded rather pompous, but I didn’t care.

Everyone was pleased with the resumption of Sunday dinner being dessert at Miss Manley’s, and sick of Gladstone’s clumsy questioning, we tacitly made a pact not to discuss it further despite Stuart’s and Glenda’s curiosity.
